Dr. Rebeca Smith
Dentist
Rebeca is a dentist who lives and works in Guatemala. She is fluently bilingual in Spanish and English, and has gone on approximately 12 mission trips with DFA. Rebeca first met Dennis and Bev Bedard in 2001 in Fraijanes, Guatemala through Dr. Jorge Corona, and she expressed interest in assisting on future missions. In 2003 she participated in her first two missions with DFA, one at her health unit in the village of Fraijanes and another in a shanty town near a railroad track. She then joined the Bedards for a week in Comitancillo in 2004, her first time to that area. Rebeca participated in the Bedard’s yearly missions in Guatemala until 2005, joining them in Friajanes and El Remate doing restorations and helping with translating. After meeting Brad Krusky and Shane Fisher in Comitancillo in 2003, Rebeca also began joining them on their mission trips, sometimes going on missions two or three times in one year. She continues to travel to El Remate and Comitancillo to assist on mission trips when her schedule permits. Rebeca played a key role in starting DFA’s dental student program in Comitancillo, in collaboration with the University of San Carlos in Guatemala City, and she continues to assist with this student externship program.
